Gary is inspiring!
Former Chief Learning Officer
I joined my university's "Speakers' Club" as a student, and it provided me with a safe space to grow my public speaking abilities. Besides public speaking, it also helped me cultivates patience and empathy, two key skills which I think are underrated in today's world.
I was (also fortunate) to have been assigned Gary, who was the president of our club at that time, to be my mentor. Gary never failed to give me emotional and moral support in every task I did, and he will always be there to provide me with immediate feedback, especially when I was chairing meetings, events , or competitions. This was paramount for my growth because it allowed me to rework techniques on the spot. Gary was also not afraid to keep pushing and stretching me, by constantly encouraging me to take up roles (and even entering competitions) that I would otherwise not have dared to take up.
My training with Gary enabled me to model his mentoring when I later on became a mentor for other members myself.
All in all, I got more than I bargained for in Speakers' Society. The journey made me realise that public speaking is not only about having a glib tongue, or a snazzy personality. It's also about nurturing others, and having empathy. Thank you "uncle" Gary for the incredible support, learning & growth experience!
